Step IN to become a “Negotiator”

One of the biggest areas of conflict in both a personal life and work life is that most people don’t have a true understanding of how to negotiate. Many professionals tend to avoid situations requiring them to negotiate yet, we all negotiate on a regular basis but often we don’t realise it.

For example; deciding who will cook dinner, getting the kids to do their chores, making plans for a party are all forms of negotiation in daily life. The problem is that most women haven’t been taught the skills to do negotiate effectively.

Negotiation is a crucial part of life.  We cannot always have all the things we want so it is essential that we learn to prioritise what we do and don’t want, what we are prepared to give up and what we must have, before entering into any negotiations.  Learning the art of negotiation is a key factor to keeping stress to a minimum, achieving positive outcomes and achieving your goals.

When it comes to becoming a good negotiator, it is vital that you have the following traits:

  • The ability to listen
  • The ability to voice your perspective
  • A sense of humour (humour lightens every situation)
  • Self-confidence
  • Respect for yourself and for others
  • Flexibility

There are of course many other traits but the ones listed above will give you a head start when it comes to becoming a successful negotiator.


Before entering into negotiations it is important that you take the time to understand what the objections may be from the other party, how you can combat those objections, what weaknesses the other party may show and how your outcome can actually benefit the other party.  When you go into a negotiation fully prepared you are more likely to come away with a positive outcome for all parties.

Control your emotions

During any negotiation process it is important to remain objective and not become emotional. When we operate from a purely emotional stand point we tend to over react and make decisions that may not serve us well in the long run.

When negotiations fail…

If a negotiation cannot be reached you should not look at it as a failure but come away with the understanding that you will re-negotiate with the other party after a time apart from each other. This gives both parties to recount what went on, work out any areas that could have been handled better, see a different perspective and work out a new way forward.  Once you reconvene the negotiation it should then be easier to reach a positive outcome.  If, at the end of it all, an agreement still hasn’t been reached you then need to determine if a third party mediator could assist or if in fact, there is no way the negotiations will reach a successful conclusion.
