The Secret to Networking with Confidence

It takes one-tenth of a second for someone to form an impression of you. That’s a very short period of time for your personal brand have an impact!

Being able to represent your personal brand in a positive and confident way will make a strong impression with others, and can help you to achieve success within your career.

This might be particularly important if you would like to be successful for that opportunity or promotion, or if you’re moving into a brand new role or company.

A great technique to introduce yourself confidently to people is to create your Personal Brand Statement.

Most people when they are asked ‘what do you do’ will reply with just their job title. The problem with this is that the conversation can quickly become stalled and awkward, without more detailed information offered.

A Personal Brand Statement is a short description of what makes you uniquely YOU. Your strengths, experience, the value you bring and your passions. It is also what you want to be known for and where you want to go in your career and life.

So how do you create your Personal Brand Statement?

  • The first step is to get clear on what your strengths are. List your positive traits, strengths and skill in ALL areas of your life. Ask for feedback from trusted family, friends or colleagues.

Then OWN them. Make them part of your DNA. Put them somewhere visible where you will see them every day. Practise saying what your strengths are until it doesn’t feel awkward anymore.

  • The next step is to reflect on the value you bring to your role – you are far MORE than your job title.

What problem/s do you solve for other people? What do you do every single day that adds value? What are the really important parts of your role?

  • Finally, what are your future goals or opportunities that you are keen to explore? How could the person you are meeting help YOU?

Here’s an example for you:

“So, what do you do?”

Original answer

I’m a Personal Assistant for an Executive Director at XXXX company.

“Oh, that sounds interesting. Do you just look after their diary?”

Try this Personal Branding statement instead

I have over 10 years’ experience in executive assistance and am an expert in international travel and meeting planning. I add value to my executive directors through ensuring they are organised and on time to achieve their business goals and strategies. I am passionate about working with people and am keen to find an opportunity to move into a leadership role.

“Oh, wow! I struggle with international travel bookings within my executive team – what are your top tips you can share with me? I also know of a leadership role about to be advertised in our organisation – let me connect you!”

Much better!

The Personal Brand Statement gives insights into what you do, your strengths, where you add value, and what you are interested in. This gives the chance for one or some of these topics to connect with the person you are meeting, and to keep the conversation flowing.

More importantly, it can leave a positive and confident impression with others. When people know the value you can bring and what you are interested in, this can lead to opportunities either now or in the future.

Create your Personal Brand Statement and practice saying it – it should sound natural and not scripted. Ideally, it should be around 60 seconds to a maximum of 2 minutes. You can also tailor it depending on who you are meeting or which situation you are in.

A final tip

Don’t forget to follow up! If you’ve had a positive introduction with someone, pass on your business card/details, or connect with them on Linked In. If there was something in particular, you’d like to keep the conversation going about – send them an email saying how it was great to connect and you’d like to find out more or invite them for a coffee!
