9 Big Signs Telling You It’s Time To Overhaul Your Resume

Regardless of the last time, you did it, being last week or several years ago at some point we all have to update our resume. I heard you moan – but it’s true. For some of us that means a quick polish up and for others, it means a complete overhaul.

The thing is that many job seekers fail to realise when they need to make a change to their resume, let alone engage professional help. Many continue using the same documents year after year, without acknowledging the flashing warning signs we pass on our journey through the hiring process.

So how do you know it’s time to give your resume a proper overhaul? Well here are 8 of the key signs:

  1. Your current resume isn’t working. If you’re not getting enough calls for interviews then this is the biggest sign that your resume needs work.
  2. You’re in the market for a career change. Many job seekers make the mistake of using their existing resume to apply for positions in a new field. The problem is, if you don’t know how to identify and position your transferable skills on paper, you’ll find your resume won’t work.
  3. You’re unsure of your market worth. If you’ve been at your current company for a long time you might have lost touch with your value to an employer. This means you’ll end up underselling yourself in your resume and potentially miss out on golden opportunities.
  4. You’re in a rut.If you’re stuck in a position and need something dramatic to get unstuck, particularly if your salary is stagnant, then it might be time to overhaul your resume and get on the job search bandwagon.
  5. You’re moving. If you’re moving to a new area or country or applying for virtual positions in another country then you may need to overhaul your resume. Consider how even simple things like spelling and grammar can affect your application.
  6. Your applying within a highly competitive market. The job market has been through a bit of a roller coaster recently and some industries have been affected significantly by high levels of job cuts. This leads to increased competition and for those job seekers who found it effortless to secure a job with a half-baked resume, may now find they have to upgrade their documents to gain interviews.
  7. You’re self-employed and are looking for a “real” job.Including self-employment on your resume can be a challenge for most to get right. If you’re finding yourself not landing interviews, or being railroaded in interviews with the information on your resume, then it’s time for an overhaul.
  8. You’re re-entering the job market after an absence. Don’t know how to account for that lost time? Unsure which of your skills will be attractive to employers? You definitely need your resume upgraded.

Remember – The stronger your application, the better shot you’re giving yourself at landing the job you want. At the end of the day that’s what we’re all here for, right?
