Unlocking the Secrets of Your Personal Brand

Your personal brand is the secret to your career success – and yet most people have never heard of it.

Your personal brand is what you are known for and how you are perceived by others. It’s how you market and promote yourself. It’s what people think of you and how they talk about you.

Your personal brand is simply what differentiates you from everyone else.

Unless you work alone in Antarctica [say hi to the penguins if you do!] – you will be interacting with people every day as part of your job. Whether it’s your manager, colleagues or customers – they will all have a view of YOUR personal brand.

But how do you know what your personal brand is? And how do you create a positively amazing one?

Let’s explore how personal brand is created:

 

What Makes You YOU

The first step is to get clear on how are you currently perceived by others. Ask trusted colleagues, friends or family for honest feedback on your strengths, development areas and how they perceive you.

Brainstorm your positive features and what makes you UNIQUE. Identify what areas you also need to work on. Then, reflect on what you DO want to be known for. Visualise the values, skills and reputation that you WANT to have.

Once you have a clear vision of who you are and where you want to be, you can then confidently share this with the world.

 

Work Integrity

Do you keep your commitments, deliver on your deadlines and work with integrity?

Be known for your work ethics and reliability. Keep your promises and own up to any mistakes. These will help to build an authentic personal brand for you at work.

Another tip is to proactively drive your own development and growth. Keep learning and stay open to inspirational and innovative ideas.

Your Appearance

How you present yourself and show up MATTERS. It’s not about having expensive outfits – it’s being appropriately dressed, groomed and taking pride in your appearance.

Dressing for the job you want [and not the job you have] can be a cliché, but is actually a great guide for creating your personal brand!

Look at your role models or the people you admire. How do they dress? What are the keys to their look? Find what inspires you and build it into your own beautiful style. [Hint – if you would wear it to a nightclub, it probably won’t be a great choice for your workplace!]

 

Your Language

Are you one of those people who focuses only on the negative, complains or swears?

The language, words and what you say reflect you and your personal brand. Become aware of how you communicate and find areas that you know could be improved.

Ensure that how you communicate aligns with the personal brand you want to have.

 

How Do You Make People Feel?

Do you get involved with gossip and bitch about other people? Are you short, abrupt or impatient with others? Are people afraid to approach you?

We all want to work with people who make us feel GOOD. People who are helpful, make time for us and who we can trust.

How can you make people feel positive when they interact with you? Remember that a simple smile can go a LONG way!

Social media and online management is a crucial part of managing your personal brand. Most recruiters will now check your social media and online profile as part of the recruitment process.

What information or photos are available for anyone in the public to view? Are there photos or status updates that you KNOW should stay for your friend’s eyes only?

Consider changing your profile or information to private. Review your profile and check the visibility of past items. There are benefits to keeping your online personal life separate to your work life.

 

Final Tips

It will take time and practice to build the personal brand that you want to create. The key is to be consistent, genuine and authentic.

Visualise what you want to be known for and how it aligns with your career goals. Create positive goals to create your personal brand. Some will be quick wins and others might take a little longer to achieve.

There are many benefits to creating your amazing personal brand. It can lead to new opportunities and effective working relationships with other people.
