Stepping IN to focus

Regardless of how long your to-do list is, it is often difficult to stay focused. You may be distracted by something that is going on at home, the buzzing of your mobile phone, or you may just find that your mind is wandering while you are trying to write an email. Managing your attention is a helpful way to refocus on your work, avoid procrastination and meet your personal and company goals.

We all get distracted from time to time – it’s only natural. And sometimes maintaining the focus is easier said than done. Attention management allows you to train your attention back to what is important. Here are some ideas to help you increase your productivity and job satisfaction.

Visualisation

While visualisation may sound counterintuitive and a waste of time, it can dramatically help with your focus. Mental images or workouts will put you back on the right path. Can you visualise what needs to be done? Imagine it over and over again, so the action seems very familiar to your mind and body.

Meditation

Meditation is another method to improve your focus and concentration. It can calm your mind and aid your cognitive abilities. There is so much external noise that we have to deal with and process on a day to day basis. Thankfully, meditation can cut through it all and reduce the stress that is caused by procrastination.

Avoid Multitasking

You may believe that multitasking is good for your brain, but in fact, the opposite is true. It hampers your ability to concentrate on any given task as your mind is cluttered with stuff that prevents you performing at your best. Stop the multitasking and sit down to do a job through to completion.

If you don’t plan, you don’t succeed; it is as simple as that.

Think about what you want to achieve at work today. What would you like to accomplish in particular? Writing your goals down on paper will assist you to stay accountable and on track. Consider what distractions may get in your way and do your best to work around them.

Tackle Difficult Tasks First

Eat that frog first is one of my favourite sayings and a daily quote I live by. To stop procrastination, do the hardest task first. Once that is out of the way, you can then move on to other more enjoyable jobs. This will reduce your stress and ensure you remain at your most productive. Avoiding the most difficult task on your action list will not allow you to reach your goals successfully.
