Step IN to a Positive Mind

Step IN to a Positive Mind

Regardless of how your day is going, it doesn’t take much to throw us into a negative mind spin.

Your mindset, whether positive or negative, is determined by your response to external forces and attitudes.

A traffic jam. A delayed train. No internet connection. A negative comment. That’ll do it quite easily!

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Why do we let such things bother us so much?

It is easier than you think to challenge those thought patterns and turn that frown into a smile. But where do we start?

Smile

Why with a smile of course! Have you heard the phrase, “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry!” At least laughter will ease the stress of the situation and defuse it somewhat. And a smile will immediately help you feel better. It may not fix anything but a smile has magical properties that can quickly change the way we feel.

Breathe

In a crisis, we often forget the most basic things – one of which is to breathe. We can find ourselves holding our breath in times of trouble or stress. Breathe slowly in and out and fight those negative actions that come your way. Slow your breathing down until you feel composed enough to deal with the situation in a logical manner.

Show Gratitude Daily

Whatever the challenges, and we all have them, we must continue to be grateful for what we have. So you’ve missed the bus – at least there is another one on the way shortly. Reframe your thoughts so they resonate with positivity. A great way to do this is to replace the “have” in your vocabulary with “get”. Instead of I have to pay my bills; I get to pay my bills. I have to pick up the kids; I get to pick up the kids. I have to go to work; I get to work. See the difference!

Think Challenge Not Problem

It can be easy to dwell on a problem and often it is healthy to give ourselves the space to do just that but don’t labour over the task too much. Think of the situation as a challenge to solve rather than as a problem which cannot be fixed. This then puts the ball back in your court so you can take the necessary action to move forward. Being an optimist is a far more attractive trait than that of a pessimist.

Learn From Your Mistakes

We all make mistakes, but there is not much point dwelling on the disappointments of life for too long. We need to have the ability to pick ourselves up and learn where we went wrong. If we were faced with the same situation what could we do differently? What would we change? By learning, we can ensure that we don’t make the same mistakes twice.

Relax

Quite simply, we all need to relax. Even you! Is there some kind of action that can help you relax? Perhaps a gentle stroll around the park, yoga, knitting, drawing, reading or meditation. These are all activities which can take your mind away from the situation and enable you to relax. Once relaxed you can look at the situation from a less stressful viewpoint and come up with some answers.

If you find yourself heading for the slippery slope of negativity, then read over the points and apply them instantly. We all need a gentle reminder every now and again. Consider this yours!
