How to Make the Most of Your Days off and Fill Your Batteries

Balancing your personal life and career sometimes seems impossible, but if you don’t find a way to do that, you’re headed for burnout.

Relaxation after hard work can be difficult because of all the tension and stress caused by long hours and responsibilities, especially for people who have little free time. That’s why it’s so easy to succumb to that tempting urge to stay in bed and sleep in over the weekend, but that’s not exactly a constructive way to make the most of your day off.  

Don’t forget the maxim “work hard, play hard”, because you need to enjoy yourself if you want to be productive at work.  

Visit the countryside

Even urbanites are sometimes tired of all that concrete and glass that surround them, so going away to the countryside, at least for a day, is a great idea. Spending time in nature, enjoying its smells and sounds is beneficial for the mind and body. Hiking, having a picnic by the river, or just lying in the shade of a tree will definitely recharge your batteries.

Meditation

Meditation is one of the most effective relaxation techniques. You can do it anywhere, including your living room, backyard, park, or beach. What’s even better, you don’t have to follow any particular rules, as you can simply find a quiet spot and try to collect your thoughts and sort out your plans and ideas.

Spend time with your friends and family

Even though you see your family every day, it doesn’t mean that you actually spend quality time with them. Having a quick talk over breakfast or dinner doesn’t count, so make a plan to do something together when you aren’t tired or stressed out. Nurturing your friendships is equally important, so go out with your friends or at least give them a call in order to catch up.  

Go to the beach

This is one of the best ways to declutter your brain, by soaking up the sun, listening to the sound of the waves, and enjoying the salty air. Swimming and surfing are excellent for shaping your body, not to mention that the minerals and salt from the ocean can help your skin regenerate. If it’s a bit chilly for activities in the water, you can lie in the sand, listen to your favorite music, and read a book.  

Learn a new skill

Attending classes in order to learn something new, such as cooking, decoupage, or the basics of photography, is another way to relax and do something useful for yourself. What’s also a great option is learning a foreign language, as recent research studies show that bilingual people develop Alzheimer’s approximately four years later than those who speak only one language. Taking up a new activity will stimulate some unused areas of your brain, and you’ll also gain new knowledge that could come in handy.

Volunteer

Do something good for yourself by helping others. Volunteering is a generous act of being there for people in need. It can’t be referred to as work, because it will give you a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction more than anything else. You can sign up at your local homeless shelter or soup kitchen, and devote a portion of your free time to people who are less fortunate than you. Not only is helping others beneficial for your mental and physical health, it’s also a great asset to your community.  

It’s crucial to find some me time, no matter how busy you are. Leave your laptop at home, turn off your phone, and do something that makes you truly happy.
